You don't have to recheck you luggage. Although when you come back into the US you will have to take you luggage through customs but then you give it back to an airline agent after customs.

The easiest way to know is to look at the baggage receipts that are stuck to your ticket at check-in. These show to what destination your bag has been checked. Generally speaking the only times you'll have to recheck your bags is when you change airlines and when you pass customs entering a country. So, assuming you're using the same carrier (or partners) you'll only have to claim your bag at Heathrow to clear customs on your first journey, and at Chicago on the return. Enjoy the trip.

No. Your luggage will be checked through all the way, however understand that Heathrow is notorious for loosing luggage. Good luck there. The FASTEST flight is on U.S.Airways from Buffalo to Philadelphia, then on Aer Lingus to Glasgow through Dublin, Ireland. Just a hair under 12 hours, and you avoid Heathrow. Check it out
