What is the name Colgan Air

What is the name Colgan Air?
I've been trying to research the Buffalo,NY plane crash from March, which may be for a silly reason..But I'm getting ready to fly a long distance with a stop in NY...I want to stay as far away from that airline as possible! Ever since 9/11, this crash, the Hudson river plane landing, and numerous other international airlines that have been crashing, I am terrified of flying! The buffalo flight that crashed in March keeps being referred to as Colgan Air..what is this? I feel like they're purposefully covering up the real name of the airline, so people won't get worried. OK, RobG...I just got even more afraid after reading your answer

Welcome Aboard! Colgan Air operates as Continental Connection, United Express and US Airways Express, offering daily scheduled service to 53 cities in 15 states & Canada. Colgan Air provides world-class customer service to its passengers and offers exciting opportunities for employment. Pinnacle Airlines Corp., a publicly traded holding company, is the parent company of Pinnacle Airlines, Inc. and Colgan Air, Inc.

Colgan Air is a real airline despite your doubts. Despite the fact that it may say Continental Connection or something else on the side, it is operated by Colgan Air and uses the callsign Colgan. It is not a government conspiracy to hide the real identity of the airline. If you are flying long distance you are unlikely to fly Colgan since they are a regional airline, but your anxiety about flying on them is unfounded. I would get on a Colgan Dash 8 right now, and would have the day after the Buffalo crash. I wonder if you would be so cautious as to never drive on an interstate that has had a massive pile-up. You likely wouldn't give it a second thought although your risk of dying this way is far greater.

Nothing's being covered up. It was Colgan Air. Colgan Air is a regional airline that flies for major airlines. Thus, you don't buy a ticket to fly on "Colgan Air". You would buy a ticket for "Continental Airlines" and if that route has been outsourced, then the flight will actually be operated by a regional airline (like Colgan Air). Sometimes, it is not always clear if you will be flying on a regional or not. The flight will sometimes say "Operated by xyz airlines" when you purchase the ticket. Not flying on a certain airline because they had a fatal crash is really a silly reason. Almost all airlines have had fatal crashes at one point. It's not that those airlines are somehow less safe than others, it's just the way it is. Those same crashes could have happened with lots of different pilots at the controls and at lots of different airlines.

Many of the "express" or "regional" flights for the major airlines are outsourced to carriers that many people aren't familiar with by name due to the fact that they use the larger airlines name as the logo on the aircraft. For example US Airways Express has contracts with Mesa, Mesaba, Piedmont and Pinnacle. These are separate employee groups not connected (except by name association) with US Airways. Colgan Air probably has contracts with 2 or 3 major airlines. If you book a flight online (such as United Express, Delta Connection, US Airways Express) there will be a small notation that says 'operated by_____". It will usually be on your ticket/boarding pass also.
